IDEM APPROVES COMPLETION OF A LARGE SCALE SOIL REMEDIATION PROJECT USING
ELECTRICAL RESISTIVE HEATING
On May 10, 2010 the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) sent a Technical Memorandum to SMA stating “Therefore, IDEM agrees that the data presented in the ERH Final Report demonstrates that the ERH portion of the project adequately remediated volatile organic compounds (VOC) contaminated soils in the four treatment areas to the cleanup objectives outlined n the RWP.”
Four separate locations were remediated, having a total area of approximately 27,000 ft2, with depths of treatment ranging from 0.5 feet to 37 feet. Prior to remediation, TCE concentrations in the soils were as high as 853 mg/kg. The agreed remediation goal was that the average concentration in each of the four remediation areas would not exceed 13.0 mg/kg, as determined by using the EPA developed model called ProUCL at the 95% confidence level. A significant portion of the remediation area was underneath industrial buildings, and the time from beginning installation of the system to completion of the remediation was approximately 6 months.
For further information on this project, and six similar projects manager by current SMA staff please contact us.
